In this presentation, I will speak about the interacting phonon problems and the transport properties of high-performance thermoelectric materials. Recent studies revealed strong phonon interactions at elevated temperatures in the IV-VI compounds. Conventional first-principles approaches, however, have shown difficulties in explaining the strong temperature dependence of the phonon spectra. I will present our recent advancements in developing a robust approach that combines density functional calculations and molecular dynamic simulations to account for the strong phonon interactions observed in neutron scattering experiments. It will be demonstrated that the combination of computational approaches in the electronic and atomistic levels is extremely powerful for the design of functional materials, and the understanding of the fundamentals of materials behaviors regarding the effects of temperature, pressure and doping.
