Abstract:
The precision with which biology forms near monodisperse proteins has inspired chemists to construct complex supramolecules using self-assembly as an energy-efficient bottom-up approach. This active research interest in the field has been maintained and accelerated by a large variety of applications such as catalysis, host-guest chemistry, light-harvesting and light-emitting devices, sensing etc. The generation of such function requires precise control over the shape and size of supramolecular architectures. To achieve molecular level precision, cooperative multivalent strategy was developed to advance coordination-driven self-assembly from metallo-macrocycles to giant discrete 2D supramolecular architectures with increasing complexity, e.g., fractals and concentric hexagons. The same strategy was expanded from 2D to 3D self-assembly to construct a series of 3D supramolecular assemblies with rigid framework, e.g., sphere-in-sphere. Through further understanding of the self-assembly of supramolecular architectures, our research is poised to advance the design of new synthetic materials with molecular level precision and high physical performance.
