报告简介:

It has been more than three decades since the discovery of Bucky ball, and almost three decades since the re-discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNTs).  Now research for Bucky ball has largely been out of favor in most labs.  Since the early 1990s, there have been tremendous developments in many aspects of the mechanics of CNTs as well as their composites. The spotlight on CNTs, however, has been shifted from this one-dimensional material onto two-dimensional (2D) graphene since the successful isolation of the latter in 2004.  And subsequently, three-dimensional (3D) manifestation of 2D base-materials, such as aerogels, seems to catch heavy attention in research due to anticipated potential applications in many key technological frontiers. After more than a decade’s research effort since the advent of graphene, it seem that the center-stage taken by this 2D carbon allotrope is quietly giving way to new emerging materials such as 2D heterogeneous solids (or van der Waals heterogeneous solids). In this seminar I will cover some aspects of the mechanics of carbon allotropes for 0D to 3D, and their composites, as well as their applications in various fields. In addition, I will also touch on the mechanics of 2D heterogeneous materials and future research challenges of this new class of emerging materials.
